Volunteering FAQs

Q. What time should I arrive?

The doors are open to guests from 10am – 2pm. The majority of volunteers arrive at 8am, but you may be needed at a different time. You will receive this information from the Volunteer manager closer to the day with your shift allocation.

 

Q. What do i wear?

A. We recommend wearing closed-in and comfortable footwear such as joggers, as you will be on your feet most of the day.  You will be provided with a T-shirt to wear for the day, which we would appreciate you returning to us at the end of your shift. 

 

Q. what to bring on the day?

A. Bring as little as possible. We will have a separate volunteer room, but cannot guarantee 100% security of your belongings.

 

Q. Will lunch be provided?

A. Times for refreshment and meal breaks will be scheduled to ensure that an adequate number of volunteers are on duty. Food and drink will be provided. If you have any specific dietary requirements please notify the team.

 

Q. Can I bring my camera?

A. No cameras or photography are allowed in the Town Hall or surrounds during the event. We take the privacy of our guests seriously and are sensitive to their circumstances. If you would like photos of the event, please contact us at wshconnect@gmail.com

 

Q.can children or students volunteer?

A. You need to be over 18 to volunteer at WSHC.


Donation FAQs

Q. Who are donations going to?

A. The clothing and other items donated are for men, women and children who are either currently homeless or at-risk of homelessness.

 

Q. what is most needed?

A. As listed on our donation page, the following clothing items are in high demand:

  • Blankets (microfiber and polar fleece) 
  • Scarves
  • Beanies
  • Gloves
  • Socks (new)
  • Sleeping bags / swags

Toiletry donations:

  • Small individual bars of soap
  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Shampoo and conditioner (especially travel size)
  • Face washers
  • Combs
  • Roll-on deodorant (men’s and women’s)
  • Small packet of tissues
  • Hygiene products (tampons, sanitary pads)
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm
  • Bandaids
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Toilet paper (individual rolls)
  • Zip lock bags to hold items

 

Q. what is not needed?

A. We kindly ask that the following items are not donated:

  • Summer clothing (shorts, singles, skirts)
  • Secondhand underwear and socks

  • PJ’s

  • Swimwear
  • Uncovered shoes including thongs, sandals etc
  • Babies clothes
  • Toys

 

Q. how will clothing be distributed on the day?

A. All clothing will be donated to Vinnie's Parramatta Central. On the day vouchers for Vinnies will be handed for guests to collect clothing at their local Vinnies. These winter items will be distributed on the day blankets, beanies, scarves and backpacks for guests.

 

Q. where can I drop donations?

A. 

For clothing donations

Please drop all clothing donations to a your local Vinnies Western Sydney store. Visit www.vinnies.org.au/shops to find your nearest store or you can email mailto:parradio@vinnies.org.au citing WSHC and the type and quantity of the donations you would like to drop off or have collected.

For toiletry donations

Homeless and at risk homelessness FAQs

Q. I'm currently homeless, can you arrange some ACCOMMODATION for me?

A.  Unfortunately Sydney Homeless Connect cannot arrange accommodation for you directly, but we can put you in touch with services that can.

 

Q. is there a list of shelters and services I can access on the day?

A. Yes, please see here.

 

Q. Do I need to register?

A. No, just come along. We do not gather any names, data or registration on the day. We do encourage guests to provide anonymous feedback so that we can improve our event - just ask one of our WSHC team members on the day.

 

Q. How much does it cost?

A. Everything on the day - including entry - is free. We will have warm meals, haircuts, portrait photography and more!

 

Q. when and where?

A.  Our 2018 event is on Monday August 6th 2018 at Centenary Square Parramatta. This is a 2 minute walk from Parramatta Train Station, in front of Parramatta Town Hall.

 

Q. Is transport to and from the event provided?

A.  No, however your invitation card is also a transport card allowing free travel to and from the event on Sydney and Intercity train services (except Domestic and International Airport stations), Sydney metropolitan buses, Sydney Ferries and light rail. This can only be used on Monday August 6th 2018. 

 

Q. where can i get an invite/free travel pass card?

A. All of the major homeless service providers have been provided cards to be given to you. Or you can send us a message with a post address on our Contact Us page.

 

Q. is it safe for women?

A. We will have a separate women’s area set up for privacy, respite and relaxation. 

 

Q. can I bring my childrenp?

A. Yes, we welcome children of all ages. It is a family friendly day.

 

Q. Do you have other events?

A. No, WSHC is an annual one-day event. 

 

Q. is wshc part of any government or religious group?

A. No, WSHC is 100% independent and a volunteer run charity. 


Service Provider FAQs

Q. What time should I arrive?

Service providers should arrive by 8.30am on the day for enough time to sign in and set up.  A support service induction will begin 9am, grand-opening will commence at 9.30 am, with the official event opening at 10am.

 

Q. What do i wear?

A. We recommend wearing closed-in and comfortable footwear such as joggers, as you will be on your feet most of the day.  You will be provided with a T-shirt to wear for the day, which we would appreciate you returning to us at the end of the day. 

 

Q. what to bring on the day?

A. We arrange tables and chairs, you bring along anything else you need.

 

Q. is there wi-fi?

A. No 

 

Q.Is there parking or vehicle access?

A.  Unfortunately there is no on-site parking available for services, volunteers or guests. The closest carpark is Horwood Place Carpark or Westfield Parramatta.

 

Q. does anyone make money from the day?

A. No, WSHC is powered 100% by volunteers and volunteer organisations. All of our supporters, volunteers and service providers, provide their products, equipment, services and/or time for free.
