2017 WSHC

a great success

Tuesday 9th August, 2017

Evolve Housing were once again the lead organiser of the Western Sydney Homeless Connect (WSHC) event held this Monday 7th August in Centenary Square Parramatta. The event kicked off Homelessness Week events in Parramatta which is running from 7 to 13 August. WSHC was officially opened by our very own Deb Ireson (MC), City of Parramatta Administrator Amanda Chadwick; Geoff Lee MP for Parramatta; Leonie King; and Rev. Keith Hamilton (Parramatta Mission) and Betty a client of Evolve Housing for Youth (EHY).

WSHC was an outstanding success, we estimate that WSHC 2017 welcomed around 1000 guests experiencing homelessness and disadvantage and connected them with support services to help them end the cycle of homelessness. Over 60 volunteers came together to support the event with over 50 support services from across Western Sydney across housing, legal, finance, education, employment, womens support, animal support, youth support and more. Many free on-site services were available to guests including:

  • 1,200 warm meals
  • 116 haircuts
  • 288 health checks
  • 25 dental checks
  • 7 pet checks
  • 113 clothing vouchers and clothing,
  • 300 care packs
  • 41 printed portraits

This was the third year that Evolve Housing had been the lead organiser of the event and it is part of Evolve’s commitment to taking action on the issue of homelessness in Western Sydney.
